CD Review By Nathalie Baret
CD Review "Thankful" Jennifer Hanson ***½
- By Nathalie Baret
It’s been five years since Jennifer Hanson has recorded an album. But it’s not like she planned to wait that long. Irrespective of the sultry vocalist churning out a well-worn Top 15 radio hit with "Beautiful Goodbye," a country song sharpened with electric guitars and polished with pop measures, Hanson asked to break from her recording contract with Capitol Nashville following the release of her 2003 self-titled debut. Even though her track was a smash, the label said her newly crafted tunes for a follow-up album didn’t have hit potential. Hanson went on to prove Capitol wrong.
Since her amicable split from Capitol, Hanson, who is also a well-respected songwriter in Nashville, penned a couple of solid hits that have kept her pockets full, her confidence up, and her name in place.
Smart, contemporary, likeable tunes such as her composition "Leave the Pieces," which country duo The Wreckers (Jennifer Harp and Michelle Branch) recorded and released as their first radio single, gave Hanson big kudos when it stayed at No. 1 on the country charts for several weeks. More recently, Hanson’s talent resurfaced when she took credit for "A Different World," a song she wrote that turned into a Top 5 hit for Bucky Covington.
But what Hanson really wanted is a second shot as a solo artist.
So she funded her own studio time starting in 2006 and laid down enough tracks for a record. Collaborating with Los Angeles producer and musician/songwriter/engineer Nick Brophy (Everclear, Avril Lavigne, Marty Stuart), the two labored over fashioning an accomplished set of honest, more edgy songs. By mixing layered vocals that move from a sweet, natural sound to a tougher pop edge, and enhanced with sparse instrumentation that shuffles in a gumbo of clean acoustic guitar and punchy electric guitar, the well-molded end product inked Hanson a new deal with Universal South Records.
In her June release "Thankful," the singer/songwriter and acoustic guitar slinger journals her trials and tribulations on the more introspective and personal sophomore album. Challenged with going from being signed, to songwriting for other artists, to renewing her own faith in herself as a performer, lyricist and musician, she confronts herself in "Won’t Give Up" and rejoices in "Incredible World," two songs that track her resilience to quitting her art and her cosmic appreciation for the unexplainable wonders of the world.
Co-producing, co-writing, as well as playing many of the instruments on the new recording, Hanson channels Sheryl Crow and Liz Phair on some songs, bringing in an infectious pop lilt with great chord progressions on the lead single
"Joyride" and the cuts "Love Will Find a Way Around," "Bittersweet" and "Stepping Off."
Without a shortage of raw emotion, Hanson wears her heart on her sleeve in the impeccable, simplistic, warm ballad "Thankful" and second single to radio "73," which reflects on the scars left by her parents’ divorce when she was 6 years
old.

"Well today was a real treat! I had the great pleasure of hanging with the lovely Ms. Hazel Smith at her home in Nashville where we taped an episode for "Southern Fried Flicks" which airs on CMT. Hazel made some delicious food which I had the good fortune of getting to eat…yum!! Jennifer Hanson @ The Miss California Pageant
Hey Everybody!
I just got back from Fresno, Ca where I performed at the Miss California Pageant this past weekend. Now some of you may or may not know I was Miss CA some years back so this was the first time for me to return since giving up my crown. Wow! Does time fly!! But it was so great to see so many familiar faces and dear friends. I have always been an advocate for the Miss America program and strongly believe that my involvement in the program as a young woman was key in my future success as I pursued my music career. Here are a few pictures from the evening…….xo….JH

Here I am backstage at the Miss CA pageant with Nick Brophy and Chelle Hyde, my former traveling companion while I was Miss CA.

Here is a shot from the stage that I took! What a great crowd! Check out the video!
