Jennifer Hanson and Bob McKay/WXTU --
It's easy to see why Universal
Records South artist Jennifer Hanson was recently
named country music's hottest new artist in Nashville
Lifestyle's annual What's Hot Poll. In addition to
being one of country's great new voices, Hanson is
also one of the genre's most successful songwriters
(The Wreckers' "Leave the Pieces," Bucky Covington's
"A Different World," and her own hit singles). Hanson
has been traveling coast to coast, playing her brand
new single, "Joyride," for radio station execs. Here
she is pictured with WXTU's PD Bob McKay. |

"Hottest Country Artist" |
Jennifer Hanson
graces the cover of Nashville Lifestyles' just
released Hot List issue, on stands now. Additionally,
the popular publication has named her the Hottest
Country Artist. According to the magazine, "Hanson's
combination of captivating vocals (one writer
describes it as a 'honeydew voice'), legitimate
songwriting talent and irresistible beauty come
together in a truly rare package, made all the rarer
for her seasoned approach to music-making in general.
Poised on the edge of a breakthrough year, it's all
too obvious---and yet strangely irresistible---to say
that Jennifer Hanson is at the beginning of one long
'Joyride'. "
Just this week, Universal Records South released
"Joyride," Hanson's first single for the label. The
triple threat artist co-p rod uced her upcoming CD
release with Nick Brophy, co-wrote all of the songs on
her record and played several of the instruments. This
year, Hanson also wrote hit records for other artists,
including the Wreckers' #1 single, "Leave the Pieces,"
and Bucky Covington's "A Different World."

The History of I’ll Be Home For Christmas…
I'll be home for Christmas you can plan on me. Please
have snow and mistletoe and presents on the tree...
In 1943, "I'll Be Home for Christmas" joined "White
Christmas" to become one of America's most popular
homegrown holiday songs. Recorded in a rich baritone
by Bing Crosby, "I'll Be Home for Christmas" shot to
the top ten of the record charts (as "White Christmas"
had for Crosby the previous year) and became a holiday
musical tradition in the United States.
A song titled "I'll Be Home for Christmas" was also
copyrighted on August 24, 1943, by Walter Kent (music)
and James "Kim" Gannon (words). Kent and Gannon
revised and re-copyrighted their song on Sep. 27,
1943, and it was this version that was made famous by
Bing Crosby.
On October 4, 1943, Crosby recorded "I'll Be Home for
Christmas" with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra for
Decca Records. Within about a month of its being
copyrighted the song hit the music charts and remained
there for eleven weeks, peaking at number three. The
following year, the song reached number nineteen on
the charts. It touched a tender place in the hearts of
Americans, both soldiers and civilians, who were then
in the depths of World War II, and it earned Crosby
his fifth gold record. "I'll Be Home for Christmas"
became the most requested song at Christmas U.S.O.
shows in both Europe and the Pacific and Yank, the GI
magazine, said Crosby accomplished more for military
morale than anyone else of that era.
"I'll Be Home for Christmas" was recorded by Perry
Como (1946), Frank Sinatra (1957) and now Jennifer
Hanson, along with countless other artists. |

| July 31,
2003 - Jennifer Hanson has been tapped to host an in
flight special for American Airlines starting August
1. The "Eye on American" piece, which is produced by
CMT, will focus on women in country music - legends as
well as some of today's superstars. The special, which
will run the entire month of August on select domestic
and international flights, will be seen by some two
and a half million people! This latest project comes
on the heels of what's already been an incredible ride
for Jennifer. Since the release of her self-titled
debut album earlier this year, Jennifer has been
making a name for herself in the industry. She
performed her debut single, "Beautiful Goodbye," on
NBC's "Tonight Show" just weeks after the release of
her first CD and was named one of the "Next Big
Things" in country music by "USA Today." She was also
nominated for Top New Female Vocalist by the Academy
of Country Music. Jennifer will also be featured in an
upcoming fashion spread in "New York Times Magazine,"
and has been tapped by "Ladies Home Journal" to appear
in a beauty piece, tentatively scheduled for the
November issue. |
| Jennifer Announces CMA
Broadcast Finalists! |
 |
July 29,
2003 - Some of Country Music's hottest new stars will
announce the finalists for the CMA Broadcast Awards,
Tuesday, Aug. 26 (7:15 AM/CDT) at the Grand Ole Opry
House in Nashville. The audio announcement of the
finalists, which is one of the most anticipated events
of the year for Country radio, will be carried live on
many radio stations across the country.
Announcing the finalists for the 2003 CMA Broadcast
Personality and Station of the Year honors will be
Jennifer Hanson, Steve Azar, Buddy Jewell, Jimmy Wayne
and Darryl Worley. The announcements will be made
prior to the announcement of the finalists for "The
37th Annual CMA Awards," which will be carried live by
"The Early Show" on the CBS Television Network with
CBS News Anchor Hannah Storm, reigning CMA Female
Vocalist of the Year Martina McBride and special
guests reigning CMA Horizon Award winners Rascal
Flatts.
"What an outstanding group of artists to announce our
Country radio finalists," said CMA Executive Director
Ed Benson. "Radio helps drive awareness of our new
artists and Country radio has certainly embraced this
group during the past year."
Hanson landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Single
Sales chart with her debut hit "Beautiful Goodbye"
from her self-titled Capitol Nashville release. This
year she has already made five appearances on the
Grand Ole Opry, including a recent debut performance
of her current single "Half a Heart Tattoo."
Azar wrote and recorded the modern, working man's
anthem, "I Don't Have to Be Me ('Til Monday)" and has
been working hard touring in support of his Mercury
Nashville debut Waitin' On Joe. The companion music
video for the title single, featured actor Morgan
Freeman and was on CMT's "Top 20 Countdown" for 14
weeks.
Jewell's self-titled Columbia Records release debuted
at No. 1 on Billboard's Country Album chart and No. 13
on the Top 200 Album Chart - the third highest Country
debut album in the Nielsen SoundScan era behind Billy
Ray Cyrus's Some Gave All and LeAnn Rimes' Blue. The
"Nashville Star" winner is currently in the Top 15 on
the singles charts with his self-penned "Help Pour Out
the Rain (Lacey's Song)."
Wayne is known as a songwriter (co-wrote Tracy Byrd's
"Put Your Hand In Mine"), but he is quickly making a
name for himself as a performer with the release of
his self-titled DreamWorks Records Nashville album.
His debut single, "Stay Gone," which he co-wrote,
recently reached No. 3 on Billboard's Country Singles
Chart.
Worley has experienced an exceptional year since his
nomination for the Horizon Award at the 2002 CMA
Awards. His pro-American anthem "Have You Forgotten?"
took only five weeks to hit No. 1 - and stayed there
for seven. His DreamWorks Records Nashville album by
the same name has sold more than 500,000 copies since
it was released in April. In March, Worley performed
before an address from President George W. Bush at
McDill Air Force Base and was presented the USO Merit
Award in April.
The CMA Broadcast Award winners will be recognized
during "The 37th Annual CMA Awards," which will be
broadcast live Wednesday, Nov. 5 (8:00-11:00 PM/EST)
on the CBS Television Network from the Grand Ole Opry
House in Nashville.
The finalists for Broadcast Personality and Station of
the Year are selected in four categories (Small,
Medium, Large and Major markets). The categories are
established by market size based on population as
ranked by Arbitron. There is a separate category for
National Broadcast Personality of the Year. CMA
members, who are full-time, Country on-air
personalities and CMA member radio stations in the
U.S. and Canada, were eligible. Personalities who were
not CMA members, but were employed by a CMA member
station were also eligible.A panel of distinguished
broadcast professionals, representing all market sizes
and regions, judge the entries. Winners are determined
by the aggregate score of the first round of judging
and the second round, which is done by a different
panel of judges. The international accounting firm of
Deloitte & Touche LLP tabulates scoring by the judges. |
| Jennifer's Sexy
Inspiration! |
 |
| July 21,
2003 - Any songwriter will tell you that inspiration
can strike at any time. For Jennifer Hanson, the story
behind her new single, "Half a Heart Tattoo,"
illustrates that concept perfectly. According to
Jennifer, who co-wrote nine of the 11 tracks on her
self-titled, debut album, inspiration for this
particular song came compliments of "Sex and the City"
actress Kim Cattrall. As the story goes, Jennifer
caught about 30 minutes of "Exception To The Rule," a
movie Kim was starring in. In the film, Kim's
character planned to blackmail a man she had an affair
with - even showing up at a business dinner he was at
with his wife. Of course, the wife is completely in
the dark about the affair and at one point during the
dinner, the women end up in the restroom at the same
time. Jennifer says, "Kim has this tattoo on her leg
of half a heart. She's adjusting her skirt and the
other woman comments on it, saying, 'Wow, half a
heart. Usually you see a whole heart.' And Kim
replies, 'Well, he's got the other half.' So I
thought, hmmmm, 'half a heart' and tucked away the
idea." She goes on to say that when she hooked up with
songwriters A. J. Masters and Michael Heeney and told
them that story, the song ended up writing itself."
Even in the midst of touring and media appearances
that Jennifer has been making since the release of her
debut album, she has still made sure to carve out time
for her writing. She explains, "Songwriting is such an
important part of who I am as an artist. Heck - I'm
married to one of the finest writers in this town
(Mark Nesler), so it's definitely part of my daily
life." |
| Make That Number 5 ! |
 |
| July 1, 2003
- Jennifer debuted her new single, “Half a Heart
Tattoo” on the Grand Ole Opry on June 27, making the
performances her fifth appearance for the year on the
Opry. Jennifer’s performance was also included on Opry
Live, which airs 7:00 to 8:00 PM CT, Saturday nights
on CMT. |
| 101st Airborne ! |
 |
| April 3,
2003 - The 101st Airborne Division has played a major
role in the war with Iraq, and Jennifer Hanson made a
point of showing her support in March. She went to
Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the home base for the 101st,
and performed a benefit concert for the Officers'
Wives' Club. Jennifer took a personal tour of the
base, where she saw soldiers going through their
physical training, and she also viewed a fake village,
where troops learn to search building by building as
they prepare for urban warfare. She said, "Considering
the news we are hearing from Iraq, watching this
particular training exercise was especially sobering.
It gave me a bird's eye view of what is going on in
Iraq, and the very specific training these men and
women receive." Jennifer's concert featured music from
her own debut album, but it also included a handful of
cover songs, including one very appropriate tune:
"What A Wonderful World," which became a pop hit for
Louis Armstrong in 1987 after it appeared in a war
movie, Good Morning, Vietnam. Jennifer declined an
opportunity to join in on one military exercise that
required rappelling down a 40-foot water tower. One of
her band members did it, though: Mark Nesler, who's
also her husband and the man who’s written many
country hits like Tim Graw's "Just To See You Smile,"
George Strait's "Living And Living Well" and Aaron
Tippin's "For You I Will." |
